Saturday

After researching about the different plants available in Singapore, we decided upon using air plants or succulents for our terrariums as they are low maintenance plants that are also more likely to thrive in Singapore's hot weather.

However, the question of on whether we were capable of nurturing and caring for a plant came up as none of us have had the prior experience of maintaining plants. Therefore, once the morning lesson ended, we headed down to a plant nursery to learn more about the techniques of caring for plants and to perhaps adopt a plant each as well so as to get a feel of how to take care of the plants we would eventually use.

The plant nursery that we chose to go was called Pick-A-Plant, and they mainly specialized in air plants and succulents which were the plants that we were planning to work on for our terrariums. We were truly amazed by the huge variety of air plants and succulents that Pick-A-Plant had!

We went to ask one of the workers there to explain to us the methods that he used to care for the plants. The worker was really friendly to us and explained thoroughly on what we should look out for if we were to adopt one of the plants there. He told us that air plants and succulents are very easy to be nurtured.

An air plant can be watered by dipping it inside a bowl of water once in two days. However, it was really important to make sure that the plant does not remain wet three hours after watering as that may cause it to rot. Apart from that, the plant just has to be placed at an area with good airflow and sunlight. In the case of succulents, we were told that they only had to be watered once a week. It was also important to make sure that we should only water the soil that the plants are in and to ensure that their leaves do not get wet when being watered. Succulents grow well in dry conditions with good airflow.

Speaking to the worker there gave us confidence that we may be able to nurture and maintain air plants and succulents well. Each of us decided to adopt an air plant and a succulent from Pick-A-Plant and test out what we had learned from there. As future terrarium sellers, we needed to be well versed on the methods of maintaining the plants and we believed that we would learn it through caring for our own plants. With that, together with the plants that we adopted, Frond will continue to grow!
