Entry #2

The Botanist

13th October 2018

Today our group went for a terrarium workshop held by The Green Capsule. Personally, it was a really good experience as I got to learn the proper techniques to create a terrarium. We started off filling the first layer of a container, that was provided to us, with gravel followed by a layer of soil.

Once done, we were given plants to plant in the soil. Our group originally planned on using air plants or succulents for the terrariums that we wanted to sell. However, for the workshop, we were given ornamental plants and holland moss and we had to do a closed terrarium unlike the open terrarium concept that we wanted for our business. We were told that the methods of creating the primary layers was similar for all terrariums so i felt it would still be beneficial to learn the techniques on doing this particular type of terrarium.

After the planting process, I felt that I was not really attracted to the terrarium that I made and I felt that something important was missing. This was the time that we were given figurines to put in our terrariums. The figurines got me excited as I could choose any figurines that I wanted to convey a story that I wanted to tell. I felt that after creating a story in my terrarium, I was more attracted to it.

I designed my terrarium as shown in the picture below. I named my terrarium, "The Botanist". The terrarium portrays a girl or a botanist studying plants in a garden. It is inspired by someone i know from the past.

Through this experience, I really learned that the soul of a terrarium is the story that it's trying to tell. I feel that the terrariums that we make and sell should incorporate such stories in order to make it more attractive to the consumers.

With that,
