Entry #14

Going Vintage

3rd January 2019

With one event already booked for January, it was time to arrange the next event that Frond would be participating in. A list of possible events in January had already been done up by Shun Kai and me. However, most of them were 7 day events which we could not possibly participate in as our semester would begin this month. There were also events held at Turf Club and at a new shopping centre called The Woodgrove which we did not feel are the locations that we would find our right target market. Out of all the events in list, the event that looked most appealing was the Lifestyle and Vintage Market that was to be held at Katong Square from 11th to 27th January. It was a type of event that we had not tried before and we would also be able to promote our products to a different type of audience through this event.

I contacted the person in charge, Gary, through whatsapp and I managed to find out that we would be able choose specific dates to hold our booth for the event. However, after discussing with the group, all of us felt that we could not give a confirmation to register for the event without doing a site survey. Thus, Cleo, Cheryl, Jia Xin and I went down to Katong Square last weekend to do a site survey of the place.

During the site survey, we noticed that mostly tourists were walking by the area as there was a hotel near the place. There were several restaurants around the area that could attract people too. With majority of tourists visiting the place, we felt quite worried that they would not purchase our terrariums if we set up booth there as it would hard for them to transport plants overseas. However, we did have quite a number of terracotta pots leftover from our previous Christmas event that we could sell off in this event together with our terrariums. As it was a lifestyle and vintage market, Cleo suggested that we could also do hand painting of the pots with vintage designs at the booth itself. With that, all of us agreed that we would participate in the event for a weekend on 12th and 13th January.

I contacted Gary again to book a booth for 12th and 13th January. I asked for a small table which measures 4ft x 2ft and would cost $50 per day. Gary, however, said that they already had a regular plant vendor selling air plants for past 2 years and he needed to check again whether they would be ok with another plant vendor. He took a few days to check but today gave me thumbs up to register for the booth!

With two events already booked, Cleo also managed to get us an opportunity to sponsor a College of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences (COHASS) day event at NTU on 29th January. Our logo would be included in event marketing collaterals and we would also have a free booth on the day itself. Things are looking good for January so far. I'm hoping for the best for all events!
