Entry #1

5th October 2018

We had no idea where we were heading when we first started brainstorming for ideas.

Before the first lesson began, we met up on several occasions to discuss about possible ideas and realized that all of us were leaning towards F&B products. Our initial idea was to sell rice balls or smoothies in school in the North Spine area, and we tried out various recipes to see if the idea was feasible. In the end, we decided to scrap these two ideas because we realized that there were multiple licenses required to set up a stall, and we were unable to meet these criteria based on our budget and due to venue constraints.

Along this line, we were considering doing a supper delivery service for NTU- an admittedly overused idea but extremely difficult to execute. The only license we had to obtain to carry out this service was a food handling license which was feasible, and we could also work with popular food establishments among NTU students, like Ah Lian etc. However, this would require manpower which would be challenging on our end with the workload of school, so again we scrapped this idea.

After attending the business showcase, we realized that the teams presenting mainly veered towards selling products instead of service, so we thought along the same line as well. Plants came up in our discussion and that was the starting point of our final idea. We decided to focus on air plants which does not require soil and is easier to take care of compared to other types of plants, and to throw in some design concepts, we researched on the various ways to present them so that it appeared unique.

We decided to sell terrariums which had aesthetic appeal since it looks minimalistic and classy when placed in a glass container and it also gives us much room to play around with our creativity.

Right when we decided to do this, I reached home and my mum conveniently told me she received a gift from her colleague who grows air plants. Just as conveniently, she passed over the two plants to me and told me that I had to care for it now, knowing that I had this idea forming in my mind. Privately, I'm quite sure that she just doesn't want to kill it after a failed experience with a cactus :')
